Whether we’re talking the slight deregulation that now allows the Big 12 to have a championship game despite having only 10 members, or if the expansion talks are going to come through after all, I think everyone acknowledges that the current setup is beyond flawed.
So what are the most likely options? According to the rumor mill Oklahoma currently holds most of the leverage in the talks as they stand to lose the least if it doesn’t go their way, see how the playoff played out for the Big 12 last season compared to this season if you don’t believe me there. What is Oklahoma looking for then? David Boren, president of OU, has said a few times now that he won’t consider a championship game unless the conference expands back to 12 teams and separates into two divisions, while everyone else is just desperate to gain a 13th game to make sure they get a spot in that ever elusive 4 team playoff when they get the chance. To me that all but solidifies an expansion happening in the next couple years, but who would move?
Houston Cougars
The most obvious choice is Houston. They’re desperate for championship consideration, they’re a growing program, they’ve got a recruiting class that already competes with those in the Big 12 (though this could also easily be a deterrent), and they can flat out play. If an expansion happens and they’re not involved in it I’ll be shocked.
Louisville Cardinals
Again a good option for expansion, growing program (despite their showing last season), a damn good stadium, and it gets them into a new tv market.
Air Force Falcons
This ones a bit more of a stretch. On top of the obvious recruiting limitations at Air Force you have the fact that it’s not a big school, they don’t have that big of a stadium, and honestly nobody really likes to play against them. However there are a couple other alternatives that would get the Big 12 some good old Rocky Mountain TV time.
Colorado State Rams
If there’s one thing CSU hates more than the smell of their campus in the spring, its losing to the Buffs. State needs a way out of the Mountain West and the Big 12 is by far their best option. There’s big money already in the area, all it takes is giving them a reason to spend it on football.
BYU Cougars
Really the only downside to BYU is the fact that if Houston also got a bid there’d be a lot of name confusion. BYU also represents a good tv market and has a history of playing better than their recruiting strength suggests. I wouldn’t be surprised to see them as a consideration.
Boise State Broncos
Another team looking to get out of the Mountain West in a big way. Boise would stand to gain a lot in being part of an expansion and the Big 12 would get its hands into a market it wants. its a win-win, but you know the MW doesn’t want them out. Boise is essentially the financial glue holding that conference together right now.
Enough of what I think though. What are your thoughts?

No new TV market, so no UH.
Louisville - sure why not, B10/12 already has midwest connections, good TV market and money, plus good BB
AF, nah, not enough TV market/money to bring in
CSU - worse than CU, small time TV market
BYU - stretches conf a lot, travel for WV would suck, good TV and money though
Boise - similar to Louisville, but no basketball
Of these I could see Louisville or Boise and UH. I don’t think adding UH is useful, but I can see it. But I don’t forsee adding both Louisville and Boise. I say Louisville and UH most likely.
UT still has the conf by the balls in a way, regardless of what OU says IMO. They own the majority of the revenue stream. They also own the clusterfuck that the B12 has become. Thanks UT!

Hahah I could see it. I don’t know if their market is as developed as a Boise State or Houston. That would get them a team away from their current recruiting class.

The Memphis metro area has over 1.3 million people; I think they will do fine.

I still have PTSD from the 2007 Fiesta Bowl so screw Boise State.
